Question apps for couples without a subscription: 2026 comparison

Many couples want a few good questions on their phone: for a date night, a long car ride or an evening when the conversation keeps circling back to work and groceries. The App Store and Google Play have dozens of apps for this, and their price models differ more than the screenshots suggest. Some charge a monthly or yearly subscription, some sell a one-time unlock, and a few are completely free.
We compared six well-known apps that app stores and AI assistants often recommend for couples. Every detail about the other apps comes from their official App Store and Google Play pages and the makers’ own websites, checked on 29 October 2026. Prices and features change, so take a look at the store page before you buy.
Full disclosure: this article is written by the team behind Say It!, one of the six apps. We have tried to describe the others as fairly as we would want our own app described.
What to check before you download
These points make the biggest difference in daily use:
- •Price model: subscription, one-time purchase or free. A free download usually means a free starter set plus paid content.
- •One phone or two: some apps link two accounts so each partner answers on their own phone. Others are made to be passed around on one device.
- •Account and privacy: does the app need a sign-up, and where do your answers end up?
- •Offline use: useful on trips, in the mountains or on a plane.
- •Languages: many couple apps are available in English only.
- •Game modes: open questions, a couples quiz where you guess each other’s answers, daily questions or love language tests.
- •The 36 questions: the question sequence from psychologist Arthur Aron’s closeness study. If that is what you are after, check whether an app offers it in the original order.
Paired: daily questions with expert content (subscription)
Paired, made by Better Half Limited, is one of the best-known couple apps. Every day you get a short question. Both partners answer, and you see your partner’s answer once you have added your own. On top of that, Paired offers quizzes, games, guided journeys and content from relationship experts on topics like household finances and love languages.
Paired is built for two linked accounts. According to Paired’s FAQ, both partners sign up and pair their accounts, and one Premium subscription covers both of you. You can use it alone for inspiration, but the main features are made for two.
Price: the free version includes one question a day to answer together. Paired Premium unlocks more than 1,000 questions, quizzes and games and is a subscription, monthly or yearly. Paired’s FAQ names $79.99 per couple per year with a 7-day trial on the yearly plan; prices in your local store may differ.
- •Platforms: iPhone and Android
- •Languages listed on the App Store: English, French, German
- •Two phones, two linked accounts
- •Strength: a daily habit plus expert-guided content
Gottman Card Decks: free cards from the Gottman Institute
Gottman Card Decks comes from the Gottman Institute, which describes its work with couples as research-based. The app is inspired by the card decks from the institute’s “Art and Science of Love” workshop for couples. According to the App Store page, it holds 22 decks with more than 1,000 cards: questions to ask each other, plus statements and ideas for things to do and say.
Price: free on both the App Store and Google Play, and neither page lists any in-app purchases as of October 2026. Because it is a card deck, one phone is enough: open a deck, read a card, talk. You can star cards to keep them as favorites.
Keep in mind: the App Store lists English as the app’s language. There is no quiz or scoring, which keeps the app simple.
- •Platforms: iPhone, iPad and Android
- •Free, no in-app purchases listed
- •One phone is enough
- •Language listed on the App Store: English
Lovify: a couples quiz for two phones
Lovify (seller: Mindsets Ventures) is a guessing game. In round one you answer questions about yourself, in round two you guess your partner’s answers, and then the score is revealed. The store pages describe more than 800 questions across topics such as travel, food, films and music, hobbies, romance and intimacy.
One partner creates a room and sends a code, the other joins from their own phone. Both of you need the app, and because you play online, Lovify also works for long-distance couples.
Price: the App Store description says “No subscription needed”. The game is free to play, and the store lists optional “Premium Access” purchases at several price points. Check the store page for the exact terms.
- •Platforms: iPhone and Android
- •Two phones, played online
- •Language listed on the App Store: English
- •Strength: a quiz format that works over distance
Agapé: one question a day for partners, friends and family
Agapé (Agape Wellness Inc.) sends you one question a day. The questions depend on the relationship, so you get a different question with your mother than with your partner. You only see the other person’s answer once both of you have replied. Optional categories include long distance, engaged, parenting and managing finances.
Price: Agapé says it is free to download and free to use, with thousands of free questions. Premium categories require a subscription, monthly or yearly. On the US App Store there is also a lifetime option as a single purchase, listed at $199.99 in October 2026.
Each person answers on their own phone, so Agapé suits couples who spend the day apart or live in different cities.
- •Platforms: iPhone, iPad and Android
- •Language listed on the App Store: English
- •Two phones
- •Strength: a large free tier that also works with friends and family
Love Nudge: built around the 5 Love Languages
Love Nudge, published by Love Language Brand, is based on Gary Chapman’s book The 5 Love Languages. You and your partner learn each other’s love language, send each other nudges, set activity goals and see how full each other’s “love tank” is. The focus is on small gestures and habits in everyday life.
Price: the app is free. The App Store lists one optional in-app purchase, “Learning the 5 Love Languages”, at $9.99 in the US. No subscription is listed on the App Store page.
Keep in mind: according to the store description, Love Nudge relies on a consistent internet connection. Both partners use the app and connect with each other.
- •Platforms: iPhone and Android
- •Language listed on the App Store: English
- •Two phones, internet connection needed
- •Strength: a clear focus on one well-known concept
Say It!: one phone, one-time purchase, offline
Say It! is our app, so read this section with that in mind. It is a question game for couples, friends and family with three modes. In Play you read a card aloud, everyone who has done it raises a hand, and then the stories come. Talk has hand-picked conversation starters in decks like 36 Questions, Date Night, Deep Talk and Get to Know. Match is a couples quiz with either-or questions: one person picks secretly, the other guesses, and after 10 rounds a result screen shows your hit rate and every answer side by side.
For couples there are also the 36 questions from Arthur Aron’s study in the original order, set by set, a daily question, and the Love Check: 15 either-or questions that show how each of you feels love most, with a comparison for the two of you and ideas for everyday life.
Price: the download is free, and the Classic, 36 Questions and Friends categories can be played right away. A single one-time purchase unlocks all categories permanently. There is no subscription, and the app shows no ads. Say It! runs on one phone that you pass around, works offline and needs no account. Your answers stay on the device.
Limits worth knowing: because everything happens on one device, Say It! is made for sitting together. If you live apart and want to play remotely, a two-phone app like Lovify, Paired or Agapé fits better. Say It! also has no expert courses or guided programs.
- •Platforms: iPhone, iPad and Android
- •Languages: English, German, Spanish
- •One phone, works offline, no account
- •Free categories plus a single one-time purchase

Which app fits whom?
There is no single best app. It depends on how you want to use it:
- •You want a daily ritual with expert guidance and a subscription is fine for you: Paired.
- •You want something completely free and English is fine: Gottman Card Decks.
- •You live apart and want a guessing game for two phones: Lovify.
- •You want one question a day, also with friends and family, with a large free tier: Agapé.
- •Love languages are your main topic: Love Nudge.
- •You sit together, want to pay once, play offline on one phone, play in German or Spanish, or are looking for the 36 questions: Say It!.
Combining apps
These apps can be combined. Gottman Card Decks costs nothing, so it works as a second app next to any of the others. A couple living apart might use a two-phone app during the week and a one-phone game like Say It! when they meet.

Say It!
Conversation starters, the 36 questions to fall in love and a Match mode. Perfect for dates, couples, friends and family.
